Catt played fly-half in the 36-0 thrashing by South Africa

England have named 36-year-old Mike Catt at inside centre in place of the injured Andy Farrell for Saturday's quarter-final against Australia.

Olly Barkley has also been ruled out and his place on the bench is taken by Newcastle youngster Toby Flood.

Catt played in the thrashing by South Africa earlier in the World Cup but did not feature against Samoa or Tonga.

Australia will start as favourites and Catt said: "We are going in the right direction, but we are huge underdogs."

London Irish centre Catt, who will win his 73rd cap, came off the bench in England's last-gasp win against Australia in the 2003 final.

The 36-0 defeat by South Africa in the second game in France took England to a new low but Catt insisted both he and the squad as a whole had recovered from the experience.

"I know when you play a bad international, I accept it and put my hand up, but as a team we didn't perform either, apart from probably Jason Robinson," he stated.

"All of us realise that things went horribly wrong in the South Africa game but that was three weeks ago and a lot of water has passed under the bridge.

"There have been a lot of discussions since then and we seem to be back on track and going in the right direction - whether we have gone as far as we want to be, I am not really sure."

Former Great Britain rugby league captain Farrell will miss the match after picking up a calf strain, while he has been joined on the sidelines by Barkley after the Bath man picked up a dead leg during training.

The match is a re-run of the 2003 World Cup final, which England won with an injury-time drop-goal from Jonny Wilkinson.
