606: DEBATE

Full-time: An absorbing if not particularly attractive game finishes with a hard-fought Italian win. Romania did well but let themselves down with poor discipline. Italy were flat and will need to work out why before their next game against Portugal on 19 September.

78 mins: A great late burst from Romania. A promising break down the right flank involving the full-back Iulian Dumitras gives the crowd someting to roar about. But Dumitras' pass to winger Catalin Fercu is poorly timed and Italy are able to snuff out the threat.

72 mins: PENALTY Italy 24-18 Romania
This is getting a bit ridiculous now. No sooner do they wipe out Romania's penalty, than Italy give one away at the other end. Ionut Dimofte makes no mistake.

70 mins: PENALTY Italy 24-15 Romania
Romania again have only themselves to blame when skipper Sorin Socol is penalised for head-butting. Ramiro Pez extends Italy's lead and wipes out all Romania's recent hard-fought gains.

67 mins: PENALTY Italy 21-15 Romania
Romania still have chances here and they opt to punt a penalty into the corner. A good take gives the men in yellow a platform and after a few forward lunges the backs have a go.

The ball is chipped over the top, bounces free and centre Csaba Gal scuttles over, but the referee calls them back for a deliberate knock-on and penalty to Romania. But there is a delay as Marius Tincu is laid prostrate on the floor. Eventually the hooker gets up. He's as tough as old boots. Ionut Dimofte kicks the penalty. Referee Spreaders eventually deems Tincu is too out of it to carry on and orders him off.

63 mins: PENALTY Italy 21-12 Romania
The first real scrap breaks out on the floor as the game threatens to spark off. Romania hooker Marius Tincu gets a talking to and Italy get another penalty which Ramiro Pez thumps over. On the sidelines, Italy's Paul Giffen, who was stretchered off earlier, gingerly re-emerges to join his team-mates on bench.

60 mins: PENALTY Italy 18-12 Romania
Romania are shooting themselves in the foot with the amount of penalties they're giving away in rucks and mauls. Ramiro Pez takes an easy three points as Italy edge clear. Romania are restored to 15 men as Alexandru Manta returns from the sin bin.

56 mins: The Romanians are just getting a bit niggly among themselves as Italy have come back into it. They need to stick together now because there's plenty left in this.

52 mins: TRY Italy 15-12 Romania
Italy edge towards Romania's line but try-scorer Alexandru Manta is sin-binned for pulling down the maul.

Italy opt for the line-out and then get another penalty as Romania take a man down in the air. This time Italy choose a scrum and when it goes down, referee Tony Spreadbury rushes under the posts for the penalty try.

49 mins: Italy have brought on old stager Alessandro Troncon for Paul Griffen to win his 99th cap. Troncon might just be able to add the spark that Italy have been missing.

47 mins: TRY Italy 8-12 Romania
You little Tincu! Romania build up a head of steam and a marauding break, involving several hacks on, ends with the hooker Marius Tincu, who was sin-binned earlier, barging through the Italian defence to score. A change of kicker gives a chance to Ionut Dimofte but there is a long delay as Italy scrum-half Paul Griffen is slowly and carefully stretchered off. Dimofte converts.

45 mins: Romania win another penalty but again Iulian Dumitras misses from inside his own half. Meanwhile, Italy fly-half Ramiro Pez limps off only to reappear shortly after.

43 mins: TRY Italy 8-5 Romania
Italy look sluggish after the re-start and the Romanians edge to within five yards of their line. From a line-out, they catch and drive and thunder over.

Referee Spreaders is unsighted and is forced to go upstairs. The ruling - rather surprisingly, it has to be said - is that number seven Alexandru Manta touches down. It looked like it spilled out of his hand. Anyway, game on.

41 mins: Romania kick off the second half and immediately give away a penalty.

Half-time: Italy have some regrouping to do. Big time. Romania will be chuffed and fired up for the second period.

38 mins: Italy's hearts were in their mouths then as fumble after fumble sees a Romanian prop rumbling to within yards of their line. Eventually Italy scramble the ball away but Pierre Berbizier's men are a shadow of the side that set the Six Nations alight.

35 mins: Romania were mounting a strong finish to the half before Italy turned over the ball and thundered it down field.

31 mins: Romania's Iulian Dumitras has another crack at a penalty from just inside his own half but again, it's long enough, he just pulls it left.

27 mins: The Romanian tight five are a powerful unit and their defence is of the offensive variety. But they give away a lot of penalties for lying over the ball off their feet and someone is courting a visit to the sin-bin. The latest transgression gives David Bortolussi a chance at the sticks but he misses.

25 mins: Italy string together some good stuff and feed the ball through the hands of the backs down the right but they spill the ball at the last minute to let Romania off the hook.

21 mins: Romania get a good piece of fortune when Iulian Dumitras' monster punt downfield is nudged into touch by Italian full-back David Bortolussi.

19 mins: Italy have been camped in Romania's 22 for some minutes now and they eventually manufacture an opening for hooker Carlo Festuccia on the left flank. But the Italian is adjuged to have stepped in touch and the video official instructs referee Tony Spreadbury to rule "no try".

16 mins: A comedy of errors there. Italy nick the ball from a ruck and break down the blindside before going back left. Gonzalo Canale puts the grubber through and Catalin Fercu gathers and tries to counter from his own in-goal area. He goes for a kick but is tap-tackled and the ball bounces free. Italy touch down but a penalty is called earlier in the move.

14 mins: Romania build a promising forward platform in Italy's 22 but the Six Nations side are able to withstand the brief pressure and clear their lines. The Romania number four Sorin Socol, by the way, has possibly the tightest shorts I've ever seen on an international rugby player.

12 mins: PENALTY 8-0 Romania
The muscular Romania pack are pinged for diving over the top and full-back David Bortolussi steps up to bang over the three-pointer. There's a good trumpeter in the Stade Velodrome tonight.

10 mins: Ramiro Pez is pulling the strings for Italy and tries another dink over the top but Iulian Dumitras calls for the mark and clears.

8 mins: Try-scorer Santiago Dellape was apparently hurt touching down and is being shepherded back to the bench.

6 mins: TRY Italy 5-0 Romania
Italy's pressure in the Romania 22 yields a loose ball and Ramiro Pez pounces to feed Santiago Dellape for the first try. Full-back David Bortolussi, sporting a half-hearted Jonny Wilkinson arm arrangement, is short with his conversion from the left.

4 mins: The splendidly sideburned Paul Griffen chips one over the top for Italy to chase and puts Romania under pressure deep in their half.

2 mins: Even stevens in the opening exchanges before Ramiro Pez thunders into Romania full-back Iulian Dumitras. Romania get a penalty and the boy Dumitras dusts himself off to have a crack at the posts from the halfway line. It's huge and plenty long enough, but a bit to the left.

1900: Italy's Ramiro Pez gets things under way on a sultry Marseille night.

1850: Italy will be smarting from their 76-14 demolition at the hands of New Zealand and will be looking to extract some sort of revenge against Romania.

The Romanians, playing their first game, will know this, and will not want to play the role of cannon-fodder. Could be fun.
