80 mins: Japan press hard in the last couple of minutes and keep the ball alive through multiple phases to give the crowd an absorbing finish.
An attempted grubber kick runs dead and Fiji think it's all over but the referee pulls them back for a penalty and Japan get to go all over again.
But despite nudging into the Fiji 22, Japan are unable to find a way through for the crucial touchdown.
77 mins: TRY Japan 31-35 Fiji
Japan catch and drive and grind to within yards of the line before stalling. But Luke Thompson, hanging just off the ruck, gets the ball and crashes over for his second. This is turning into a bit of a thriller.
75 mins: Undimmed, Japan are stringing a good passage of play together here. They support each other and recycle well and when they earn a penalty they quickly punt it into the corner.
73 mins: PENALTY Japan 24-35 Fiji
Fiji win another penalty and Nicky Little immediately points to the posts to put the game out of sight.
70 mins: TRY Japan 24-32 Fiji
Fiji are putting in a strong stint and have Japan under the cosh. They win a penalty just yards out and opt for a scrum. Fiji pile down the blind-side and rumble over, with lock Kele Leawere coming up with the spoils and a crucial bonus point for four tries. Nicky Little ensures Japan need more than a converted try to win.
66 mins: Fiji squander a golden chance to score when inside centre Seremaia Bai throws a wayward pass on the left flank.
64 mins: The first real outbreak of biffo occurs on the left flank after Fiji scrum-half Mosese Raulini is floored by three Japanese players. Wing Kosuke Endo gets a bit of a talking to, as does Fiji skipper Raulini.
62 mins: TRY Japan 24-25 Fiji
Japan are fizzing with the introduction of Yuki Yatomi at scrum-half. He takes a quick tap penalty and hares 40 yards before Japan win a penalty. Bryce Robins opts to pump it into the corner for the line-out. They catch and drive and rumble over for a good try, with prop Tomokazu Soma coming up with the ball. Shotaro Onishi makes a bit of a hash of his conversion.
55 mins: TRY Japan 19-25 Fiji
More vintage stuff from Fiji as some silky interpassing sticks outside centre Seru Rabeni over in the right corner. Nicky Little misses the conversion this time.
54 mins: PENALTY Japan 19-20 Fiji
This game has ignited. Fiji win a penalty in front of the posts and Nicky Little strokes the ball over.
50 mins: TRY Japan 19-17 Fiji
Japan hit back immediately with a score from Kiwi Luke Thompson, who scuttles through a huge gap in the Fiji defence. Shjotaro Onishi converts. Delasau comes back from the sin-bin for Fiji.
48 mins: TRY Japan 12-17 Fiji
Great stuff from Fiji, that. Mosese Raulini makes a good inside break, flings a long pass out left to Isoa Neivua who finds flanker Akapusi Qera on his right shoulder for a second try.
42 mins: PENALTY Japan 12-10 Fiji
Bryce Robins drops out for Japan to get the second half under way. The men in red win the ball back immediately and pour forward into the Fiji 22 before winning a penalty for the opposition backs straying offside. Shotaro Onishi strokes the three-pointer.
Half-time: It's anyone's game, this. Japan will turn around sensing they've got a chance at quite a big upset. Fiji should, at least, realise they're the better side and knuckle down. But chances of that happening...?
39 mins: PENALTY Japan 9-10 Fiji
Fiji's Vilimoni Delasau is sin-binned for a swinging arm but so far this hasn't been particularly tasty in the biffo stakes. Japan's Shotaro Onishi bangs over the three points to cut the gap to one at half-time.
36 mins: TRY Japan 6-10 Fiji
Finally Fiji do what they do best. A monster of an open-side, Akapusi Qera, picks up a loose ball and thunders 70m to score under the posts, with a little bit of showboating at the end thrown in for good measure. Nicky Little converts. Qera, by the way, has been snapped up by Gloucester in the English Premiership.
33 mins: Japan are just the same, mind, with some nice running, passing rugby before the final ball, which would have created a one-on-one in the corner, is flung too far in front.
30 mins: Fiji are so frustrating. They have this genius for creating space and then they drop balls, throw rubbish passes, knock-on, or, as just happened, don't even watch the bloke who is about to pass it to them.
27 mins: PENALTY Japan 6-3 Fiji
Japan's big Tongan-born winger Christian Loamanu has a bit of a run on the right flank and earns a penalty, which Shotaro Onishi slots over.
26 mins: If I'm not mistaken, I reckon the neutrals in the crowd fancy a Japanese win here. Japan are certainly edging back into it, but on the face of it you'd say Fiji are the better side. They're just struggling to string many phases together.
20 mins: Japan weather a mini Fijian storm and edge forward up the left flank, setting up a good attacking line-out on the 22. Fiji nick it at the front, though, to create some breathing space.
16 mins: PENALTY Japan 3-3 Fiji
Japan win a good line-out and make their first meaningful sortie into the Fijian 22. The crowd noise rises as the first try hoves into view. The ball is spread left but hits the deck before Japan are brought back for a penalty, which centre Shotaro Onishi converts.
13 mins: Here we go. Classic Fiji. Full-back Kameli Ratuvou runs from his own 22 after taking a mark. Some trademark interplay gets Fiji deep into the opposition half before a lack of concentration in the close-quarter stuff hands Japan a turn over.
10 mins: Just as I thought at the start. It's all very loose, with plenty of mistakes and plenty of enterprise. All very different to the more structured game of the "bigger" nations.
7 mins: It's all a bit stop-start early doors but there's a good crowd in the Stade Municipal. What a laugh - a bit of rugby, then a night out in the "Pink City". Brilliant. Beats White City.
4 mins: Japan seem slightly outgunned up front early on and the first couple of scrums look a little bit "men v boys".
2 mins: PENALTY Japan 0-3 Fiji
Fiji win a penalty and Nicky Little thunders the ball through the posts from near halfway. Japan, by the way, feature a host of naturalised New Zealanders such as Luke Thompson and Bryce Robins.
1 min: That's a strong opening exchange from the men in white as Fiji rumble to within yards of the Japan line, only to be bundled into touch.
1700: Nicky Little kicks off for Fiji into the early evening Toulouse sunshine.
1658: The Fijians treat us to their own version of the Haka as the Japanese side lines up, arm-in-arm, on halfway to watch.
1655: This is our first glimpse of the Fijians at this tournament, and though they'd probably accept they're more proficient at Sevens, it's always good to see a bit of the flair that is born on the beaches of the Pacific.
1645: Afternoon all. Welcome to the text commentary for Japan v Fiji. I'm looking forward to this one. Should be a bit of racy, running rugby. Not that I mind a bash-fest, but there's something about a spot of jinkery and japery on a rugby pitch.
