606: DEBATE

80 mins: The final whistle goes in St Etienne with Portugal still scrapping away for everything in the middle of the pitch.

They may have lost by 46 points, but it's a definite moral victory for the World Cup debutants. Scotland, meanwhile, will have to get a lot more precise if they are to have the slightest chance against New Zealand.

78 mins: Portugal are creating a little bit in midfield, and the crowd are still resolutely behind them as the clock ticks down.

76 mins: TRY Scotland 56-10 Portugal
Scotland go past the half-century as replacement hooker Ross Ford crosses after a horribly bouncing ball evades several Portugal defenders.

Chris Paterson kicks the conversion.

72 mins: Portugal winger Pedro Carvalho is stopped just short of the line after a thrilling attack. They manufacture an overlap but concede a peanlty for illegal clearing out of the ruck.

Earlier in the move, their captain Vasco Uva makes superb ground down the left. The number eight has been a real star for Portugal.

66 mins: TRY Scotland 49-10 Portugal
Scotland flanker Kelly Brown is the beneficiary of some good work from Rory Lamont.

The full-back breaks down the blind-side and passes out of the tackle to Brown who is on his inside shoulder.

Chris Paterson kicks the easy conversion to move his side within sight of the 50-point mark.

64 mins: Scotland drive over the line but replacement Diogo Coutinho gets himself underneath the ball to keep them out.

60 mins: TRY Scotland 42-10 Portugal
Portugal's resistance may just be fading as they concede a second in quick succession.

Simon Webster is again the creator, adding some penetration to a meandering move. He beats four defenders before offloading to replacement Hugo Southwell to outpace the cover and score in the corner.

Replacement Chris Paterson kicks the conversion.

56 mins: TRY Scotland 35-10 Portugal
Scotland score their first points in 25 minutes as Portugal's brave defence finally gives way.

Sean Lamont escapes down the right wing and chips ahead. Portugal concede a penalty at the breakdown, and from the resulting possession Simon Webster offloads to allow Dan Parks a simple try.

And Parks also slots the conversion in his final action of the day before being replaced by Chris Paterson.

55 mins: A real shame for Portugal. They are building pressure and momentum, but Duarte Cardoso Pinto knocks on.

52 mins: A quick 22m drop-out from Duarte Cardoso Pinto releases Joao Uva. Portugal are absolutely loving every minute out there, and really rising to the occasion.

51 mins: Portugal lock David Penalva gets into a little altercation with Nathan Hines. There is a bit of macho posturing and finger-pointing but it all simmers down when Penalva blows a kiss at his opponent. Those crazy Latin types...

48 mins: The error count is creeping up for Scotland with knock-ons and accidental offsides undermining any momentum or rhythm.

Portugal's Joao Uva returns to the field. His side did not concede a single point while he was in the sin-bin.

His first contribution is to turn possession over from Scotland, and he looks a very handy little performer.

44 mins: Scotland are very lucky not to have their lead reduced further. They work a massive overlap but Dan Parks over-elaborates by launching a massive pass to the wing which Portugal's Pedro Carvalho intercepts and races away to seemingly score.

Carvalho is over the moon but his smile does not last as he turns around to see that referee Steve Walsh was playing advantage for offside.

42 mins: Scotland are lacking precision out wide and a knock-on from Jason White allows Portugal to counter with some nifty hands putting their runners into space.

41 mins: A solid start from Portugal as they take Scotland's kick-off and secure a decent touch on the 10m line.

40 mins: Scotland go for broke in the dying seconds, and Scott Murray drives his way over the line only to have the ball knocked from his grasp in the act of scoring.

The half-time whistle goes and Portugal jog off to a heroes' reception from the 30-odd thousand crowd in St Etienne.

39 mins: SIN-BIN Portugal concede a penalty for handling on the floor and get a final warning from referee Steve Walsh.

At the very next phase, Portugal again concede a penalty and Walsh decides to send flanker Joao Uva for a 10-minute rest.

37 mins: Portugal launch a huge up-and-under but there is a tremendous take from Rory Lamont under heavy pressure.

34 mins: Injury problems for Scotland as prop Allan Jacobsen is helped off with a calf injury. Gavin Kerr comes on in his place.

32 mins: PEN Scotland 28-10 Portugal
Portugal have not given this up, not by a long chalk. They win a penalty after Scotland blind-side flanker Jason White breaks off the scrum early.

Duarte Cardoso Pinto slots a great penalty from a good 30m out.

29 mins: TRY Scotland 28-7 Portugal
Back down to earth with a bump as Scotland score straight from the kick-off with Rob Dewey getting a knock-back from the high, hanging kick and going straight through two tackles to score.

Dan Parks adds the extra two points.

27 mins: TRY Scotland 21-7 Portugal
Brilliant - the crowd go wild in St Etienne as Portugal score a richly deserved try through winger Pedro Carvalho. It all comes after an over-confident Sean Lamont fires out a dreadful pass to his brother Rory deep in their own 22.

Portugal make the most of the position and embark on a series of forward drives. They win a penalty but refuse the easy three points and are rewarded when Carvalho dives over from close range. Fly-half Duarte Cardoso Pinto kicks the conversion.

24 mins: TRY Scotland 21-0 Portugal
A classy try from Scotland as Dan Parks sends out an inch-perfect cross-kick for hooker Scott Lawson to score in the corner with just one defender anywhere near him.

And Dan Parks shows he has brought his kicking boots with him as he makes the difficult conversion.

22 mins: Rory Lamont think he has a hat-trick as he crosses under the posts. He dances with delight but is not impressed when the score is ruled out for crossing in front of him.

21 mins: Portugal are succeeding in making the game very scrappy so far, with plenty of breaks in play and less than ideal ball at the breakdown.

The Portugal open-side Joao Uva is caught punching by the touch judge, and shows he is an old hand at this international rugby business by professing absolute bemusement and innocence.

17 mins: Portugal manage to get more ball at the turnover and launch a dangerous counterattack. Make no mistake, they can play the game - it's just whether they can get any kind of parity in terms of physicality.

The move comes to an end when centre Federico Sousa is penalised for clinging on to the ball on the floor.

14 mins: TRY Scotland 14-0 Portugal
This could be a day to remember for Rory Lamont as he grabs his second try in three minutes.

Scotland swing the ball right and he brushes off Diogo Mateus and Jose Pinto on his way to a powerful try. Dan Parks again kicks the conversion.

11 mins: TRY Scotland 7-0 Portugal
The dam finally breaks as full-back Rory Lamont scores Scotland's first try of the tournament.

Lamont takes a short pass from captain Jason White and straightens the line, taking two Portugal defenders with him. Fly-half Dan Parks kicks the conversion.

10 mins: The set pieces are something of a problem for Portugal with Scotland able to nick their line-out ball almost at will. But Portugal's defence is solid so far, and they win a penalty to relieve the pressure after Marcus di Rollo is pinged for holding on.

7 mins: Portugal turn over Scotland possession at the breakdown and kick downfield. Simom Webster is flattened by a great tackle from open-side flanker Joao Uva. Great stuff, and there's no doubt who the neutrals are supporting here.

5 mins: Scotland are looking to Sean Lamont coming in off his wing, and Portugal are struggling a little with the blonde bombshell. Still, a more than respectable start from Portugal.

3 mins: Portugal concede an early penalty for coming in at the side and Dan Parks kicks for touch. The Scottish forwards rumble through a couple of phases before the ball goes to the backs, but Dan Parks's pass to Rob Dewey comes off the centre's head and Portugal clear their lines.

Scotland will need to be more clinical than that if they are to run up the sort of score that has been suggested in some quarters.

1 min: Portugal kick off, and Scotland kick long to set up a position on half-way.

There are some decent tackles early on from Portugal, but it may well be a long day for them in St Etienne.

1658: The Rugby World Cup is treated to its first rendition of the Portuguese national anthem, and if the players' singing is anything to go by, we are in for a cracker.

There's tears a-plenty and a couple of the front rowers on the end of the row are jumping up and down like punks at a Sex Pistols gig in 1976. It's a heartening display of raw emotion and shows what it means to these players to finally get a chance on the world stage.

Scotland look far more composed during "Flower of Scotland" and will want to keep that professional approach during the match.

1655: Let's have a quick reminder of the players on show at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard today.

Scotland: R Lamont; S Lamont, Di Rollo, Dewey, S Webster; Parks, Blair; Jacobsen, Lawson, E Murray, Hines, S Murray, White (capt), Hogg, Taylor.
Replacements: Ford, Kerr, MacLeod, Brown, R Lawson, Paterson, Southwell.

Portugal: P Leal; D Mateus, F Sousa, D Mateus, P Carvalho; D Pinto, J Pinto; R Cordeiro, J Ferreira, R Spachuck, G Uva, D Penalva, J Somoza, J Uva, V Vuva.
Replacements: J Mure, J Correia, P Murinello, D Coutinho, L Pissarra, P Cabral, M Portela.

1650: In what is probably not a first-choice XV, Scotland have recalled Dan Parks at fly-half and Scott Murray, their most-capped player, to resumes his second-row alliance with Nathan Hines.

Number eight Vasco Uva will lead a Portugal packed with players you have probably never heard of. He is joined in the back row by brother and blindside flanker Joao Uva. They're both household names, in the Uva household.
