606: DEBATE

80 mins: Referee Wayne Barnes blows the final whistle to bring the match to a conclusion. It's a strange one to sum up. Bizarrely, Italy may well take some positives from their second-half display, but the All Blacks really have laid down a marker against the fourth best side in Europe.

New Zealand's power, pace and precision really is something to behold. Who is going to take up the challenge of taking them on?

76 mins: Italy are really finishing with a flourish as replacement Ezio Galon seems to have scored his side's third try. Roland de Marigny chips over the top, hitting the crossbar and prompting a New Zealand knock-on. The loose ball is dived on by Galon, but the video referee inexplicably disallows it.

The referee says there was an act of foul play in the act of scoring the try, but it was certainly not picked up by the TV cameras.

72 mins: TRY New Zealand 76-14 Italy
Fair play to Italy as they cross for their second try of a testing afternoon. Marko Stanojevic bursts onto a pop pass from Roland de Marigny but is held up just short.

The ball bobbles loose and centre Mirco Bergamasco improvises well, hacking on and touching down himself. Roland de Marigny adds the conversion.

69 mins: TRY New Zealand 76-7 Italy
A second try in a minute for Jerry Collins as an exhausted Italy begin to fall off their tackles. He kicks ahead inside the Italy 22 and regathers, and Luke McAlister kicks another two points.

68 mins: TRY New Zealand 69-7 Italy
Jerry Collins is in the right place at the right time to get a rare try. The All Blacks work the ball right to Doug Howlett who grubbers inside, and Leon MacDonald picks up before feeding Collins.

Replacement Luke McAlister kicks the extras.

65 mins: Doug Howlett is inches away from taking the record outright as he sprints onto the end of Dan Carter's kick, but Marko Stanojevic just gets his boot to the ball in time.

60 mins: TRY New Zealand 62-7 Italy
New Zealand winger Doug Howlett is having a lovely old time of it in Marseille, as he completes his hat-trick by getting on the end of Dan Carter's grubber kick.

He probably owes Mils Muiliana a beer - or an isotonic energy drink, most likely - as the centre generously pulls out of his attempt to touch down to allow the winger his third try. Howlett's try is his 46th in an All Blacks shirt, bringing him level with Christian Cullen as their all-time record try-scorer.

Dan Carter misses with his conversion attempt from wide out.

57 mins: TRY New Zealand 57-7 Italy
An absolutely top draw try from New Zealand as they scorch up the field. Italy make some brave tackles, but the support runners are just everywhere, and eventually an offload from Dan Carter finds Doug Howlett bursting onto it at full pelt.

He outstrips the cover and hands off Italy's Kaine Robertson, a former school-mate and team-mate of his from Auckland. That was payback for the time Robertson wouldn't let Howlett copy his maths homework on the bus. Dan Carter kicks the conversion.

53 mins: Excellent stuff from Italy as their more aggressive attitude really makes the All Blacks defence work. Silky smooth handling releases Mauro Bergamasco but the ball goes forward at the last moment.

49 mins: TRY New Zealand 50-7 Italy
After a relatively encouraging few minutes, Italy's defence lets the All Blacks through to bring up the half century.

Byron Kelleher makes the initial break, offloading to Rodney So'oialo. Ali Williams takes it on before passing to his second row partner Chris Jack who hints at a dummy before galloping unopposed under the sticks. Dan Carter adds another two points.

45 mins: Italy take the game to the All Blacks, driving it up the middle before a lovely display of pop passing out of contact takes them into the New Zealand 22. Why didn't they play with this aggression in the first half?

44 mins: A hint of over-confidence from the All Blacks? They fling the ball around with gay abandon, going nowhere in particular, before Leon MacDonald's aimless floated pass eludes Rodney So'oialo and bounces into touch.

41 mins: SIN-BIN The second half gets under way with a fight on the floor between Carl Hayman and Italy replacement prop Andrea Lo Cicero, with several players also adding their two penny's worth.

After consulting with his touch judge, referee Wayne Barnes decides Hayman was the guilty party - at least he was the one throwing the most obvious punches, anyway - and gives the All Blacks prop 10 minutes in the bin.

1340: The players return to the field of play, with the Italians looking determined to make some impression after an absolute horror story in the first half. Best of luck to them.

"I've heard that 15 fish have challenged the All Blacks next - to a game in a barrel as they believe they have more of a chance than Italy!"

40 mins: The half-time whistle goes and the shell-shocked Italian players trudge off the field. I have absolutely no idea what their coach Pierre Berbizier is going to say to them at half-time... any ideas?

As for All Blacks boss Graham Henry.. well, he's going to be absolutely furious with Byron Kelleher for throwing that interception pass.

A simply breathtaking 40 minutes of rugby from the favourites, although there will surely be tougher challenges to come. The All Blacks have done the basics so well, and that's all it's needed against an Italian team that just haven't turned up so far.

37 mins: TRY New Zealand 43-7 Italy
The comeback starts here. Watch out New Zealand... Former Bristol winger Marko Stanojevic salvages some pride as he intercepts Byron Kelleher's pass on halfway and gallops from halfway to score under the posts. that's just about the first mistake the All Blacks have made all game.

Full-back David Bortolussi kicks the conversion. All Italy need now is for the All Blacks to offer a few more run-ins a la Scotland in this year's Six Nations.

"New Zealand are simply brilliant - what a joy to watch."

35 mins: Italy mount a cheeky little attack down the right touchline with Sergio Parisse taking it on, but the move eventually fizzles out.

"Is this the Rugby World Cup or a one-day cricket score? Mind you the All Blacks would spread the ball all over at that too..."

29 mins: TRY New Zealand 43-0 Italy
An early contender for try of the tournament. A feeble kick allows Leon MacDonald to call a mark on the edge of his 22. The Italian defence turn their backs on him. Not a good idea.

The full-back takes a quick tap to himself and sprints straight down the middle of the pitch, making 30m before Ali Williams takes the ball on. He flicks an outrageous offload out the back of his hand to Sitiveni Sivivatu, and the winger powers through two tackles to dot the ball over the line. Incredibly, Dan Carter skews the conversion wide.

28 mins: Italy are finally starting to play some rugby worthy of their name, but their abysmal kicking game is badly letting them down. The other teams will probably be making a mental note: "avoid sending aimless kicks in the general direction of the most ruthless attacking team in the world."

23 mins: Italy have their first period of half-decent possession, but some of the hits coming in from the Kiwi forwards are absolutely brutal. The Italian players are just getting skittled out of the way at the breakdown.

"Hundreds of England fans have filled the cafes and bars in the centre of Lille, and many of them are taking in the All Blacks-Italy match before making their way to Lens on special "rugby special" trains.

"On the train from Paris this morning I met an All Blacks fan who was on a stag do from London, which started in Barcelona on Thursday, then took in Paris on Friday, heads to Lens today for the England game and then Nantes tomorrow for the Wales-Canada game. Pretty messy schedule I'd say, but he'll be happy with that start by the ABs."

19 mins: TRY New Zealand 38-0 Italy
This is men against boys. Make that supermen against newborns. It's all far too easy for the All Blacks as another kick over the top causes panic in the Italian defence and Sitiveni Sivivatu crosses for New Zealand's fifth try.

This is frankly ridiculous, with Dan Carter adding another conversion.

16 mins: TRY New Zealand 31-0 Italy
The All Blacks are absolutely merciless - not least to journalist trying to do minute by minute reports.

A Dan Carter kick over the top isolates full-back David Bortolussi, and his fumble allows Mils Muliaina the simplest of tries under the sticks. Dan Carter - you know the rest...

12 mins: TRY New Zealand 24-0 Italy
The All Blacks are scoring at the rate of two points a minute and this is already getting ugly for Italy.

A terrible kick gifts possession to the All Blacks and winger Sitiveni Sivivatu escapes down the left wing. He steps inside, feeds Rodney So'oialo who keeps the move going. The ball comes out to the right with Leon MacDonald and he feeds winger Doug Howlett to score his first try of the campaign. Dan Carter kicks the conversion.

9 mins: PEN New Zealand 17-0 Italy
This is an absolute nightmare for Italy so far. Captain Marco Bortolami is penalised for taking attackers out without the ball, and Dan Carter adds another three points.

7 min: TRY New Zealand 14-0 Italy
Richie McCaw is enjoying himself out there as he crosses for his second try of the match before some of the crowd have even finished the first bite of their hot dog.

Another line-out move reduces the Italian defence to rubble with scrum-half Byron Kelleher driving through before slipping a short pass to McCaw to power over. Dan Carter curls over the conversion.

1 min: TRY New Zealand 7-0 Italy
Blinking heck. I didn't even get the chance to type about the kick-off.

The All Blacks take 64 seconds to breach the Italian defence, and it is almost embarrassingly easy. Rodney So'oialo takes the ball at the back of the line-out, feeds the ball to Ali Williams who bursts forward before offloading to Richie McCaw who strides into space with absolutely no-one at home for Italy.

The vets team at your local club would be asking some serious questions about their defence if they'd conceded that one, to be honest. Not the start you want against the All Blacks.

Dan Carter kicks the simple conversion.

1247: A quick reminder of the teams on display in Marseille:

New Zealand: MacDonald; Howlett, Muliaina, McAlister, Sivivatu; Carter, Kelleher; Woodcock, Mealamu, Hayman, Jack, Williams, Collins, McCaw, So'oialo.
Replacements: Oliver, Tialata, Masoe, Lauaki, Leonard, Mauger, Toeava.

Italy: Bortolussi; Robertson, Masi, Mirco Bergamasco, Stanojevic; De Marigny, Troncon; Perugini, Ongaro, Castrogiovanni, Dellape, Bortolami (capt), Zanni, Mauro Bergamasco, Parisse.
Replacements: Festuccia, Lo Cicero, Bernabo, Vosawai, Griffen, Canale, Galon.

1246: The All Blacks go through their traditional haka - led by Ali Williams - and it is pointedly ignored by the Italians who go into a tight huddle.

1244: A certain Jonah Lomu is also alongside the soccer players. The All Blacks legend desperately wanted to be out there in his rugby kit, but it wasn't to be.

1237: There are plenty of Kiwi fans in the stands decked out all in black, as you'd expect. They'll certainly be feeling the heat on a scorching day in the south of France. French football legend Zinedine Zidane is also in the crowd, along with former Liverpool striker Djibril Cisse.

1230: Marseille looks an absolute picture - a bright blue sky, beautiful sunshine, packed stands. The All Blacks couldn't ask for a better day for running rugby.

1225: Afternoon all. We're 20 minutes or so away from the second game of the tournament as the odds-on favourites New Zealand show us what they're made of against Six Nations over-achievers Italy.

The All Blacks will be looking to make a statement to the rest of the teams in the tournament - but they are unlikely to get things all their own way against the awkward Italian pack.
