Mallett has also coached Stade Francais |
Ex-South Africa coach Nick Mallett says he could replace Pierre Berbizier as Italy coach after the Rugby World Cup. "I am seriously considering it," Mallett told rugby365.com. "I find the idea of coaching them very attractive.
"It's something I enjoy doing - trying to improve the underdog team," added Mallett, who led the Springboks to 27 victories in 38 Tests from 1997-2000.
Berbizier said in April that he did not want to renew his contract after the World Cup, which ends on 20 October.
Mallett guided South Africa to a world record-equalling 17 consecutive Test victories and also took Stade Francais to the Heineken Cup final.
Italy's rugby federation has not commented on a possible replacement for Berbizier.
Should Mallett succeed the Frenchman, he will be the fourth foreign coach to lead the Azzurri in nine years.
Former All Blacks John Kirwan (2002-05) and Brad Johnstone (1999-2002) have also led the team.
