Somerville has not played for New Zealand since August 2006 |
Prop Greg Somerville has been confirmed in New Zealand's World Cup squad after recovering from a series of injuries. The 29-year-old has not played a Test since rupturing his Achilles last year, and recently underwent surgery on a torn retina, but has been passed fit.
All Blacks coach Graham Henry, who left a place open for Somerville, said: "The signs are that he'll be ready for contact before we leave for France.
"We'll have a good amount of training time with him in Marseille as well."
Somerville is a vital member of the All Blacks squad because of his ability to play on both the loose-head and tight-head sides of the scrum.
Two other players carrying injuries - prop Neemia Tialata and scrum-half Andy Ellis - were also confirmed in the squad.
Both players suffered head injuries while playing in domestic matches, but have been passed fit to travel.
