Mortlock hails Gregan influence
Gregan's second-half arrival at scrum-half sparked the Wallabies
Gregan's second-half arrival at scrum-half sparked the Wallabies
Australia captain Stirling Mortlock said the half-time introduction of veteran George Gregan at scrum-half helped earn the 31-0 win over Wales.

"Yet again we had a scrappy start to the game. We knew it was going to be slippery out there but we knew we had to lift our game," Mortlock said.

"We got into a bit of rhythm in the second half, George (Gregan) coming on at half-time helped stabilise the team.

"We put in 40 quality minutes but there is still a lot of improvement left."

Australia led 6-0 at the break through two Mortlock penalties after a lacklustre first half from both sides.

But Gregan's arrival off the bench, Matt Giteau moved into the centre and Adam Ashley-Cooper making way, helped revitalise the Wallabies.

A debut try from Digby Ioane early in the second half helped the Wallabies extend their lead to 14-0.

The second try came in the 59th minute as they made the most of good turnover ball and Drew Mitchell capitalised, before a chip and chase by full-back Julian Huxley took the match well beyond Wales.

Mortlock scored four penalties and added two conversions.
