Understrength Boks anger Aussies
South Africa second row Victor Matfield

Australian rugby officials have slammed South Africa's decision to pick an understrength squad for the forthcoming Tri-Nations matches Down Under.

South Africa coach Jake White wants to rest big names ahead of the World Cup and has omitted 21 top players for the trip to Australia and New Zealand.

Australian Rugby Union chairman Peter McGrath said Wallaby fans would feel "betrayed" by the decision.

McGrath added: "The ARU understands their outrage."

McGrath said he wants Sanzar, the partnership which runs the Tri-Nations, to meet urgently to discuss the matter.

We're talking about the integrity and meaningfulness of international rugby

"The agreement between us clearly calls for each nation to field its best team and this is clearly not the case," said McGrath.

"It may be a Rugby World Cup year and the Springboks may have played five Tests in a row but we face the same situation.

"We all knew the Test schedule well in advance, we all knew about the Rugby World Cup."

New Zealand Rugby Union chairman Jock Hobbs added his condemnation, saying: "It's a huge concern, a major issue.

"We're talking about the integrity and meaningfulness of international rugby. It's critical, it's the very heart and soul of our game>"

In addition to the likes of captain John Smit, Bryan Habana and Pierre Spies, who missed Saturday's 26-21 defeat by New Zealand because of injury, White has rested the likes of Victor Matfield, Schalk Burger and Percy Montgomery.

South Africa are set to face Australia in Sydney on 7 July and then take on the All Blacks in Christchurch the following week.

White has recalled Saracens prop Cobus Visagie and selected three uncapped players for the matches.

The du Plessis brothers Bismarck (hooker) and Jannie (prop) and fly-half Peter Grant are the uncapped players.

Flanker Luke Watson, who was added to the first squad of the season by the South Africa Rugby union president Oregan Hoskins, was also named in the party.

Only four players who started the opening two Tri-Nations Tests and three replacements have been included.

Hooker Gary Botha, scrum-half Ruan Pienaar, wing JP Pietersen and number eight Bob Skinstad started Saturday's defeat by New Zealand in Durban because of injuries to other players.

Lock Johann Muller, centre Wynand Olivier and flanker Pedrie Wannenburg came on as replacements.
