Hodgson was booed by some sections of the Twickenham crowd |
Sale head coach Kingsley Jones has hit out at Andy Robinson for substituting Charlie Hodgson during England's defeat by Argentina on Saturday. Robinson replaced Sale fly-half Hodgson with debutant Toby Flood after only 52 minutes of the game at Twickenham.
Jones told BBC Sport: "It was a silly decision. I've spoken to Charlie and he's obviously disappointed.
"I don't think it's the best way to manage Charlie. If he had stayed on, I've no doubt England would have won."
Hodgson, who was 26 on Sunday, was booed by sections of the crowd as he walked to the touchline on Saturday.
Jones said England head coach Robinson should be bolstering Hodgson's confidence instead of undermining it.
 | With the lack of experience already at eight, nine and 12, it was a very strange decision to bring Toby on Kingsley Jones Sale head coach |
"Most number 10s need to be told they're the boss and be allowed to run the show," he said.
"It's like driving a car - if you're at the wheel, you don't need someone behind you telling you what to do.
"Charlie is a world-class player and one of the best talents I have ever seen. He's fast, strong and passes the ball better than anyone else.
"He needs to play with confidence at international level and in the same way he does for Sale."
Yet Jones said he thought Hodgson would be able to quickly get over his disappointment.
"I don't think it will be that difficult for him to get over it," he said.

"Most people who know about rugby agree it was a strange decision and are siding with Charlie. He can take heart from that.
"He's just got to be professional and go in and ask Andy why he was taken off. Then he'll have to take the reasons on the chin and be positive."
Within three minutes of his arrival on the pitch, Flood, 21, threw the pass for an interception try by Argentina's Federico Todeschini.

Jones said: "With the lack of experience already at eight, nine and 12, it was a very strange decision to bring Toby on. I haven't a clue why it was made."
Sale director of rugby Philippe Saint-Andre missed England's game because he was in Lyon to watch New Zealand hammer France 47-3.
But he said: "We will look after Charlie when he comes back to Sale, as we have in the past."
After the match, Robinson explained: "We felt we needed a little more direction in the number 10 position.
"It's disappointing for Charlie, but we felt...that those were the right calls to make."
Robinson is under great pressure after Saturday's defeat, which was England's seventh in a row and equalled their worst-ever run.
But it has been confirmed he will remain in charge for the upcoming Tests against South Africa.
