White is ringing the changes with an eye on next year's World Cup |
Springbok coach Jake White named four newcomers in the South African squad to tour England and Ireland in November. Among the four are two 20-year-olds, fly-half Francois Steyn and flanker Hilton Lobberts, who have only played one season of Currie Cup rugby.
White also called up Free State Cheetahs full-back Bevin Fortuin and Gauteng Lions centre Jaco Pretorius, the former South Africa Sevens captain.
White is resting a number of big-name players ahead of next year's World Cup.
Among those first-choice stars being left at home are scrum-half Fourie du Preez, locks Victor Matfield and Bakkies Botha, full-back Percy Montgomery, prop Os du Randt, flankers Schalk Burger and Joe van Niekerk and wing Bryan Habana.
Flanker Pedrie Wannenburg has been ruled out of the trip with a wrist injury. No replacement has yet been named , but Wikus van Heerden would seem to be the favourite.
"We are now planning for the World Cup and several of the resting players are on rehabilitation programmes and others have niggling injuries," White said.
"The squad is a balance of experience and some players who have been rewarded with caps for doing very well in an exciting Currie Cup season. I believe it's a win-win for everyone."
South Africa play Ireland on 11 November and England twice, on 18 & 25 November.
