Tuqiri had the chance to return to league after the last World Cup |
National Rugby League club Brisbane Broncos admit they are keen to take Wallaby star Lote Tuqiri back from rugby union after the 2007 World Cup. Tuqiri has indicated that he is interested in playing rugby league again following Mat Rogers' decision this week to quit union next year.
Broncos' Bruno Cullen said: "We're very interested in talking to him.
"He has remained a very good friend to the Broncos and he talks to (coach) Wayne (Bennett) a lot."
Winger Tuqiri has scored 25 tries in 46 internationals but is currently serving an 11-week ban until 2 November for a spear tackle on New Zealand captain Richie McCaw.
His contract with the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) ends after next year's World Cup in France.
Tuqiri started his professional football career with the Broncos, amassing 250 points in 99 appearances between 1999 and 2001 before his switch to rugby union.
Tuqiri's NSW Waratahs coach Ewen McKenzie said he could understand if Tuqiri is tempted by a return to where he started.
He said: "It won't surprise me at all (if he returns to league) but I'm sure he'll, given previous negotiations, have a good examination of the market and then make a decision."
Unlike Rogers, who is already 30 and normally comes off the bench for the Wallabies, Tuqiri is in his prime at the age of 26 and is guaranteed a starting spot.
The ARU view him as a prime asset and say they will do everything they can to keep him in the 15-man code.
"Lote is obviously going to be a target of some interest, and he's a priority for us," ARU high-performance manager Pat Wilson said.
"He's got another World Cup in him after next year; he has two World Cups in him, and I think you could argue that there are still some things to achieve in the game for Lote."
