The inspirational skipper was knocked cold in a tackle, but Wasps also had Jonny O'Connor stretchered off.

"Losing Simon was a blow but I don't think it had any long-term effect on that performance," Jenkins said.

"We were sloppy finishing the first half and it was a great move that Wasps scored from early in the second half."

Tom Voyce scored two tries for Wasps, while the Scarlets could muster just Barry Davies' early score and five points from Mike Hercus' boot.

Voyce's first came after Jeremy Staunton intercepted a pass from Scarlets scrum-half Clive Stuart-Smith.

It was fitting that there was an English and a Welsh club in the final Scarlets director of rugby Gareth Jenkins

The England wing was then on hand in support when Stuart Abbott burst through the Scarlets midfield after some slick passing.

"From then on we played catch-up rugby poorly and the Wasps, bit by bit, stepped it up and took it away from us, their pressure really told on us," Jenkins added.

But the man who could soon leave Stradey Park for the Wales job, having confirmed that he has applied for the vacant post, praised the new-look Powergen Cup in its inaugural Anglo-Welsh format.

"We've got an opportunity with this competition to play cross-border rugby," he said.

"It's something that's been missing for a long time, it's been a good tournament and it was fitting that there was an English and a Welsh club in the final.

"Unfortunately from our point of view the English club has won today, but well done to them."
