Fiji won the Wellington Sevens with a 27-22 victory over South Africa on Saturday as England slumped to defeat by France in the quarter-finals. England had beaten Scotland, Papua New Guinea and Australia on Friday, but lost 19-14 to the French despite tries by Mathew Tait and David Strettle.
In the final, Fiji ran in five tries to South Africa's four, with William Ryder scoring three and Neumi Nanuku two.
Fiji beat New Zealand 26-14 in one semi as South Africa thrashed France 28-5.
England won the consolation prize of the Plate Trophy with a 14-10 defeat of Argentina.
England coach Mike Friday said he hoped the team would learn from their defeat in the main competition.
"I am extremely disappointed. We never like to lose but we lost to a very good French side who were better on the day," he said. "We made some errors and at this level of competition you can't afford that.
"We do have a young side out here and learning to cope with defeat is as much of a learning curve as winning sometimes," he said.
"This is a unique environment with a very hostile crowd and the players will be learning a great deal by being here."
