Gatland has coached in the Northern Hemisphere for nine years |
Wasps coach Warren Gatland is to take charge of New Zealand province Waikato. Gatland replaces former All Blacks boss John Mitchell, who is moving to Super 14 franchise Perth, and has signed a three-season deal starting in July.
"He's one of the world's best coaches and will be a huge asset to us," said Waikato chief executive Gary Dawson.
Under the contract, Gatland, who also coached Ireland, will also work as a technical adviser with the Waikato Chiefs Super 12 franchise in 2006.
Gatland played 140 matches for Waikato between 1986-1994.
He played 17 matches for New Zealand but did not start in a Test match.
