Fit-again Dallaglio eyes England
Lawrence Dallaglio
Dallaglio is back four months after fracturing his right ankle
Lawrence Dallaglio has admitted it would be "very difficult" to turn down an England recall if coach Andy Robinson called on him.

Dallaglio, 33, who retired from England last year, is ready to return to action four months after fracturing his ankle.

He will play for Wasps against Cardiff Blues in the Powergen Cup on Friday.

"When your country calls - if it calls - it is very difficult to turn down, because playing rugby is about playing at the highest level," he said.

Dallaglio retired from international duty after England's summer tour in 2004 citing the "brutal demands" of the modern game.

But he has hinted at a return ever since having a plate and five screws inserted into the right ankle he broke in the Lions' opening tour match in New Zealand.

"I am excited about the potential we have to mount a successful World Cup defence," he said.

"We are a long way from that now, and there are a lot of players and coaches who have to restore their reputations. Fortunately we have a lot of games to do it."

Dallaglio was expected to be out for up to six months but after his quick recovery he is eager to prove he is back to his best with Wasps before thinking about England.

"Right now the highest level for me is this weekend, against probably 12 or 13 internationals," he said.

"I have a lot of work to do, and that starts on Friday. I am coming cold into a season where guys are seven games down the track.

"I have missed being in the changing room. I have missed the smell, the taste, the thrill of it and I am very much looking forward to getting back.

"This game is an ideal start for me. There is plenty on my rugby menu for the next four or five weeks without even thinking of anything else."

Robinson has indicated he would welcome Dallaglio back into the squad.

"I would love Lawrence to put himself forward to play for England again," Robinson said recently.

"The crucial thing is for him to get back playing and get back to where he used to be."
