Thomas led his side for the first time against Romania last month |
Lions coach Sir Clive Woodward says Wales skipper Gareth Thomas is one of the leading contenders to captain the side in New Zealand next summer. The Toulouse back has impressed since claiming the Wales captaincy last month and led his side to narrow losses to South Africa and New Zealand.
"It was fantastic to be down in Wales for a week before the New Zealand game," said Woodward.
"Gareth stood out, with his leadership and captaincy. He is a special player."
Ireland centre Brian O'Driscoll is still favourite to take the captain's job but Thomas, who is Wales' record international try-scorer, has obviously made his mark on Woodward.
"Gareth is a definite contender for the captaincy," added Woodward.
"He did an outstanding job, but all four countries have got wonderful captains.
"Only one player can captain the team, but we will need leadership throughout the side on and off the field."
