Centre Derek Maisey has a broken leg and will miss the Waikato Chiefs' Super 12 semi-final against the ACT Brumbies on Saturday. Maisey suffered a broken tibia during the Chiefs' final round-robin match against the Brumbies at Hamilton on Saturday, which they lost 15-12.
He is expected to be out of action for three months.
But the Chiefs are hoping All Blacks half-back Byron Kelleher will be fit for the match despite a bruised hip.
Meanwhile, the Brumbies have beaten New South Wales Waratahs to sign South African winger Clyde Rathbone for the next three years.
The former Springbok under-21 captain's new deal with the Super 12 leaders will take him through until the end of the 2007 Rugby World Cup in France.
"The Brumbies is the best place in the world to play rugby and I sincerely appreciate the opportunity they have given me," Rathbone said in a statement on Monday.
"The players and management have been fantastic and the supporters have really welcomed me into the community."
