England name Tait in Sevens

Newcastle's teenage winger Mathew Tait has won a place in England's eight-man squad for the IRB World Sevens Series.

Simon Amor, who will lead the team, Geoff Appleford, James Brooks, Topsy Ojo, Peter Richards, Ben Russell and Rob Thirlby are also selected.

Coach Mike Friday also has a 26-man wider squad, which can boost the squad for a minimum of four tournaments.

The season starts in Dubai in December and ends in London next year and has the World Cup in Hong Kong in March.

Friday, who only took over in May, is aiming to match the senior team's success at the Rugby World Cup in Australia by winning the Sevens World Cup.

The team defended their London Sevens title last season and finished runners-up in the World Sevens Series behind New Zealand for the second consecutive year.

"No country has ever done the double and followed success in the Rugby World Cup with winning the Rugby World Cup Sevens, so it's a terrific goal for England to aim for," said Friday.

"When it comes to selecting the squad for the World Cup in March, I will be going for the best 12 players, not just the sevens core and wide squads, so those not included now still have a chance."

England core squad: Simon Amor (Gloucester, captain), Geoff Appleford (London Irish), James Brooks (Wasps), Topsy Ojo (London Irish), Peter Richards (Wasps), Ben Russell (Saracens), Mathew Tait (Newcastle) Rob Thirlby (Penzance and Newlyn).

England wider squad: Andrew Higgins, Chris Goodman (both Bath), James Bailey, Olly Morgan, Will Matthews (all Gloucester), Chris Bell, Rob Vickerman (both Leeds), Dan Hipkiss, Tom Varndell (both Leicester), Tony Roques, Delon Armitage (both London Irish), James Haskell, Mike Roberts (both Wasps), Ugo Monye, Kai Horstmann (both Harlequins), Phil Dowson, Ollie Phillips (both Newcastle), Neil Starling, Andrew Vik (both Northampton), Chris Mayor, James Moore (both Sale), Ben Skirving, Richard Haughton, Joe Bedford (all Saracens), Pat Sanderson, Martin Freeman (Worcester).
