Woodward has led England to unprecedented success |
England coach Sir Clive Woodward has been confirmed as the coach of the British and Irish Lions on their 2005 tour to New Zealand. Bill Beaumont will act as tour manager, combining the post with his role as Chairman of the Lions.
England manager Louise Ramsay has accepted the role of team manager.
Woodward said: "It was a huge honour to play for the Lions and to be given the opportunity of taking the squad to New Zealand is a huge challenge."
Woodward added, however, that England and the Six Nations would remain his current priority.
"There will be a lot of speculation about our itinerary and other coaching and management appointments," he said.
"But I'm sure people will understand that I will only comment further once the Championship has been completed."
Woodward said that some planning work had to start immediately and Ramsay would be involved in initial activities. "Louise's appointment was part of my agreement to accept the job as Head Coach and her role is a crucial one to the success and smooth running of the tour," he said.
Beaumont commented: "It will be a privilege to work with Sir Clive Woodward.
"He has an outstanding record and I know he is looking forward to the challenge."
The Rugby Football Union offered its congratulations to Sir Clive.
RFU president Robert Horner said: "On behalf of everyone in the game in England I wish most warmly to congratulate Clive on his appointment."
"It is a tribute to Clive and all that he has achieved in the last six years with England, culminating in the RWC victory against Australia last November.
"I wish him every success in New Zealand in 2005."
Chief executive Francis Baron added: "I'm delighted that Clive has been awarded the honour of coaching the British Lions.
"I know he is looking forward to the challenge and he will do an excellent job."
