Scarborough scored the first try for England |
Dan Scarbrough and Andy Titterell scored a try each as England hammered hosts Canada 43-7 in the opening game of the Churchill Cup tournament on Saturday. England, without seven players who joined the squad on Tuesday having originally travelled to New Zealand with the senior squad, got on the scoreboard quickly, scoring a penalty after a Canadian offside in the first minute.
Canada scored the first try of the game after a slicing run from John Cannon to within a metre of the line
Scrum-half Morgan Williams retrieved the ball from the ensuing maul before finding daylight through a hole on the left side to score.
Bob Ross added the conversion to give Canada a 7-3 lead.
But when England full-back Scarbrough scored after 17 minutes, the rout began.
England took control, scoring five unanswered tries by Titterell, Martyn Wood, Fraser Waters, Mark Cueto and Michael Horak.
Canada's coach David Clark said that his team was rusty having not played a game since November.
"That was our first outing against a very good and well-organised team that stretched us," said Clark.
"A lot of mistakes on our part gave them opportunities from which they took great joy in running in some tries.
"We have a lot of work to do and we have to get it right to play the USA on Wednesday."
