Springbok prop Robbie Kempson has confirmed that he has signed for Ulster.

The 28-year-old loose-head prop has agreed a two-year deal with the Irish province.

Kempson, who has earned 31 South African caps, has been released from his Western Province contract and is scheduled to join the Ulster squad on 1 July.

Another Western Province player, winger Pieter Rossouw has signed a two-year contract with London Irish.

Kempson admitted that the financial package on offer had played a major part in his decision to move to Belfast.

"The security was the major aspect for me but it's also the excitement and the challenge of playing over there and enjoying the experience," said Kempson.

The prop will be reunited with Ulster coach Alan Solomons who was his former boss at Western Province.

BBC Online broke the news of Ulster's interest in Kempson earlier this month but were waiting to see if he had fully recovered from injury.

Kempson will undergo medical test in Belfast and Dublin next week.

Kempson has been sidelined since November when he was forced to pull out of South Africa's tour to Europe and the United States because of a neck injury.

The piano-playing prop who owns two racehorses, made his international debut against Ireland back in 1998.

Brought up in Eastern Cape, Kempson played for Natal Sharks before Solomons brought him to Cape Town in 1999.

Kempson plays predominantly at loose-head prop, but he can also operate at tight-head.

Meanwhile, Belfast Harlequins centre Rhys Botha is likely make a one-off appearance for Ulster in the inter-provincial against Munster on 10 May.

Injuries to Jonathan Bell, Adam Larkin and Shane Stewart has left Ulster coach Alan Solomons short in the position.
