![]() | Wednesday, 28 November, 2001, 09:13 GMT Rogers ready to crack code ![]() Mat Rogers won the RL World Cup in 1999 Rugby league convert Mat Rogers has expressed his sympathy for fellow code-crosser Iestyn Harris. Rogers played his first game of union for seven years when he lined up for the Barbarians against Australia at the Millennium Stadium on Wednesday. But he feels the pressure on him to succeed is less than the expectation that greeted Harris' change of game. The 25-year-old Rogers, who won the RL World Cup with the Kangaroos in 1999, said: "It is a bit different for myself and Wendall Sailor because we are trying to break into one of the best sides in the world. "As I understand, Wales haven't been the best side in Europe, and for Iestyn to be chucked straight into the team says something. "I have seen him play a lot of league, and he is a great player. "When we played Wales during the 1999 RL World Cup, we thought Iestyn and Keiron Cunningham were the two players who could have made it in rugby league in Australia.
"As for me, I'm just taking it step by step and trying not to get too far ahead of myself." Rogers, who last played rugby union at school, is delighted that his senior debut will be with the Barbarians. "The opportunity was too good to pass up. To be here among some of the best rugby players in the world is such a buzz. "Even though we want to win the game, the pressure of a Super 12 or a Test match isn't here. "The Barbarians are a bit of an institution in rugby circles and it's going to do nothing but help me to be around these great players." Barbarians: P Montgomery (South Africa); B Paulse (South Africa), S Glas (France), P Howard (Australia), S Terblanche (South Africa); B van Straaten (South Africa), R Howley (Wales, capt); D Morris (Wales), R Ibanez (France), D Young (Wales), I Jones (New Zealand), M Andrews (South Africa), C Krige (South Africa), O Magne (France), P Miller (New Zealand). Australia: C Latham; B Tune, S Kefu, T Kefu, S Staniforth; E Flatley, G Gregan (captain); B Young, B Cannon, R Moore, J Harrison, T Bowman, M Connors, G Smith, D Lyons. |
