Romania bank on forward power
Alin Petrache captains Romania on Wednesday

Wales v Romania at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff, Wednesday 19 September, kick-off 1930 BST.

Live commentary on BBC Radio Wales - listen online, plus extended highlights on International Scrum V BBC One Wales 2235-2325 BST.

Romania are confident they have the forward power to trouble Wales at the Millennium Stadium on Wednesday.

After suffering a comprehensive 70-21 defeat four years ago when they last visited Wales, the Romanian Rugby Federation president is predicting a much closer contest this time.

Said Dumitru Mihalache: "We have a very good pack even with some players missing.

"But we'll see on Wednesday if they are competitive at this level of the game.

"But we hope we will be able to compete in the lineouts, scrums, rucks and mauls.

"And even in the backs, we have some very fast players, especially full-back Brezoianu.

"So if we get the ball to him he will be a danger for the Welsh side."

Missing players

But Romania's hopes have not been helped by the reluctance of French clubs Grenoble and Aurillac to release players to join the national squad.

Flanker and former captain Florin Cordoeanu is a particularly significant omission.

Mihalache added: "Unfortunately we face a difficult problem to solve because we have four players who play in France that the clubs haven't released.

"All four would be in the first 15 and one of them used to be captain.

"So it's very difficult to present the best team having such a problem.

"The International Rugby Board rules are very clear but the French clubs don't respect them."

Lock forward Vasile Nedlecu is the only survivor from the defeat in 1997 to figure for the visitors on Wednesday.

The side shows six changes from the 37-3 home defeat by Ireland in June.

Seven of the Romania side come from national club champions Dinamo Bucuresti, including captain Alin Petrache.

Romania: G Brezoianu (Bordeaux-Begles); I Teodorescu (Cluj University), N Oprea (Dinamo Bucuresti), C Lupu (Dinamo Bucuresti), V Ghiol (Dinamo Bucuresti); I Tofan (Steau Bucuresti), L Sirby (Steau Bucuresti); D Dima (Castres), S Demci (Dinamo Bucuresti), M Socaciu (Rovigo), M Dragomir (Dinamo Bucuresti), V Nedelcu (Dinamo Bucuresti), M Bejan (Rulmentul Birlad), D Iacob (Farul Constanta), A Petrache (Dinamo Bucuresti, captain).
