![]() | Monday, 17 September, 2001, 09:35 GMT 10:35 UK Irish complete clean sweep ![]() Connacht's Marnus Uijs scored the try of the match Connacht 62-0 Caerphilly Connacht romped into the quarter-finals of the Celtic League with a nine-try demolition of Caerphilly on Sunday. That gave them a last eight tie against Glasgow and ensured all four Irish sides qualified with home ties when they are played on the weekend of 30 Nov/1-2 December. Ulster will now face Neath at Ravenhill, while Munster tackle Llanelli at Thomond Park and Leinster take on Newport. But it was a stunning second-half hat-trick by speedy wing Wayne Munn that was the highlight of a thoroughly professional performance by Connacht.
He ripped the Caerphilly defence to shreds as he sprinted to the line for each of his three touchdowns. But possibly the best try of the day came from hooker Marnus Uijs, who scored after an interception in first-half injury-time. It was one of the few occasions when Caerphilly were actually pressing and looking dangerous. Suddenly Uijs intercepted and darted virtually the length of the field to cross the Caerphilly line. International Eric Elwood had his kicking boots on as he converted seven of the nine tries and landed a penalty. Caerphilly had their captain David Hawkins sin-binned in the second half for a high tackle - and that just added to their problems.
From the moment Connacht took the lead after five minutes through a try by flanker Johnny O'Connor, who later scored a second, it was pretty plain for all to see that the Irish team were going to win at a canter. They dominated all phases of play and looked far sharper. Connacht led 17-0 at half-time through tries by O'Connor, Des Dillon and Uijs but in the second half it was a case of total domination.
