Edinburgh sink brave Caerphilly
Edinburgh's Marcus Di Rollo in the thick of the action
Edinburgh 27-20 Caerphilly

Duncan Hodge jumped to Edinburgh's rescue at Myreside after the Caerphilly had threatened to pull off a shock Celtic League success.

Kevin Utterson and Martin Leslie had laid the platform for a potential home rout with two early tries.

But the home side lost their momentum to let their Welsh opponents back into the contest - and they had to rely on two late drop-goals by Hodge to ensure the victory.

The stand-off - anxious to prove a point after being left out of the Scotland squad - had broken the deadlock with a penalty after a strong surge by Utterson.

Utterson then launched and finished the move which led to the opening try, with Hodge claiming the extra points to give the Gunners the ideal cushion.

They kept up the pressure and deservedly stretched their advantage when Test flanker Leslie ploughed over.

Edinburgh grew careless and Caerphilly burst back into the picture when scrum-half Alan Chiltern wriggled through, Stuart Lawrence converting.

The home troops replied almost immediately with a Hodge penalty when Welsh prop Matt Bolton was sin-binned for killing the ball on the ground.

Despite being a man down, it was Caerphilly who produced a stirring end to the half and they stunned Edinburgh with another touchdown through wing Ken Morris.

The Castlemen boosted their chances again just three minutes after the restart when Lawrence slotted a 35-metre penalty.

In a dramatic finale, Hodge claimed three more points from close in after Geraint Evans was yellow-carded for a high challenge on Chris Paterson.

But again the Welshmen responded positively to losing a man and Lawrence skipped over in the corner to close the gap to a single point.

Then came Hodge's drop-double in the last five minutes to snuff out the brave Caerphilly challenge.
