Reid stars for rampant Glasgow

Glasgow 59-14 Pontypridd

All-rounder Roland Reid staked a claim for a Scotland call-up after a wonder-show in his first full game on the wing for the Warriors.

The big man completed his ambitious switch from the back-row by claiming three superb tries to keep alive his side's hopes of reaching the Celtic League knock-out rounds.

Both sides went into the game after making sweeping changes following midweek defeats.

It was Glasgow's alternations that paid off best and Gordon Bulloch and James McLaren combined slickly in midfield to set up Glenn Metcalfe for the first of their nine touchdowns.

There was controversy in the 25th minute when the home team were denied a penalty try.

As Tommy Hayes was charging towards the line, Reid was blatantly held back by Richard Johnston.

Referee Alain Rolland wasted no time in sending the offender to the sin-bin but decided the crime was worth just an ordinary penalty.

Warriors kept the ball alive and the move paid off when Hayes cruised in under the bar to give himself a simple conversion.

But, as so often happens, the score led to a lapse in concentration and it took the Welshmen just two minutes to reply with one of their own through wing Gareth Wyatt, goaled by Alex Lawson from a wide angle.

The frantic action continued as Reid burst back into the game to restore Glasgow's advantage with try number three.

And he repeated the dose just 90 seconds later.

Even better was to come on the stroke of the break when lock Jason White powered through under the crossbar after a telling surge by Hayes.

Warriors kept up the momentum and effectively killed off the Sardis Road side as James McLaren galloped 50 metres for the sixth touchdown.

Skipper Dale McIntosh claimed a late consolation score for Ponty, goaled by replacement Ceri Sweeney.

But the rampant Reid hit back to completed his hat-trick.

Jon Steel and Lee Harrison added another brace, with Hayes converting all three to take his tally to seven.
