Bridgend blown away by Llanelli

Llanelli 36-3 Bridgend

Llanelli produced a powerful second-half display to blow away Bridgend in the wind and rain at Stradey Park.

Stephen Jones scored 26 of their points, while wing Mark Jones marked his return from injury with a try.

The match began in heavy rain and there was an immediate sign of Llanelli's forward power as they stole a scrum and line-out early on.

But their pressure went unrewarded despite one impressive break by wing Wayne Proctor.

Another Scarlets attack ended with them giving away a penalty and referee Andy Ireland then gave Silesi Finau a talking to, but Cerith Rees missed the Bridgend penalty.

Llanelli skipper Stephen Jones put a shot of his own wide before he finally got the scoreboard moving with a 16th minute penalty.

More home pressure brought another three points for Jones, before Rees finally found his range for Bridgend to make it 6-3.

Llanelli were finding it tough to break down Bridgend's defence and Neil Boobyer tried a cross-kick, but Proctor fumbled possession.

It was going to take something inspired to break the visitors down, and it almost came when Jones went on a superb 40-yard run. But the move was halted illegally and the fly-half slotted over his third penalty.

Bridgend, playing against the wind in the second half, lost hooker Christian Ferris with a leg injury just three minutes after the interval. He was replaced by Andrew Joy.

And things got worse for the visitors just after when Jones and Leigh Davies worked a loop move, and the fly-half slipped over for a try he also converted.

Bridgend's discipline was under the microscope and some wrongly chosen words to referee Ireland gave Jones a simple three points to make the score 19-3.

The mist and rain was creating numerous problems for Bridgend, and after some faulty handling Jones fired over his fifth penalty.

Bridgend made changes, with Huw Harries and Paul Clapham replacing Jason Hewlett and Shawn van Rensburg.

The Stradey crowd had something else to cheer when wing Mark Jones - injured on Wales' tour to Japan - came on to replace Proctor.

But that was nothing to the ovation that followed his first touch two minutes later.

Guy Easterby put a beautiful kick into the corner and Mark Jones showed tremendous pace to beat Mike Peters for the touchdown, with Stephen Jones converting.

Llanelli turned on the style as Neil Boobyer put the finishing touch to a fine move with Stephen Jones converting.
