![]() | Tuesday, 28 August, 2001, 21:09 GMT 22:09 UK Llanelli snatch dramatic win ![]() There is no way through for Ulster's Paddy Wallace Ulster 26-27 Llanelli A dramatic touchline conversion by skipper Stephen Jones saw Llanelli keep their Celtic League play-offs hopes very much alive at Ravenhill on Tuesday night. Llanelli were trailing 26-20 when they stormed upfield and made the space for international Wayne Proctor to squeeze in at the corner. Then the 8,000 Belfast crowd watched with disappontment as Jones rifled over the conversion from the right-hand touchline. It was no more than Stradey Park side deserved as they outscored their opponents by three tries to one. Ulster were forced to make three changes before kick-off with injuries and illness preventing Mark Blair, Ryan Constable and Jonathan Bell from lining out.
Coach Alan Solomons moved Paddy Wallace into the centre alongside Shane Stewart with Bryn Cunningham brought in at full-back and Gary Longwell coming into the second row. It was fly-half David Humphreys who kept Ulster in the match with seven sweetly struck penalties, but with a disastrous line-out and ragged scrum they had no platform to work with. Humphreys continually put Ulster on the offensive with astute kicking, but lack of possession in the danger area saw promising attacks come to nothing. On the other hand when Llanelli did manage to enter Ulster's '22' they looked dangerous and reaped their rewards. But in reality neither team rose above the mediocre although Llanelli looked the more composed. Traded penalties Humphreys had opened the opening scoring with a penalty in the seventh minute before Llanelli found an enormous hole in the Ulster defence to score the first try of the game. Number eight Dave Hodges broke wide from a scrum and from the ruck, it was hooker Marcus Thomas who was there to take the scoring pass from scrum-half Dwayne Peel to go in under the posts. Llanelli skipper Stephen Jones converted and then put his side further ahead in the 18th minute with a 37-metre penalty. Humphreys and Jones then traded penalties midway through the first half which was scrappy to say the least. Ulster, however, finished the half the stronger. Another Humphreys penalty in 38th minute was following by a try in injury time It began with Humphreys countering from his own half.
The move was carried on by full-back Bryn Cunningham and wing Sheldon Coulter. Coulter was caught 10-metres out, but his flip up pass was hacked on by Cunningham who won the race for the touchdown. Humphreys pushed Ulster out to 17-13 ahead with a penalty on the resumption, but Llanelli stormed ahead in the 44th minute when Garan Evans went over after they ran a penalty in front of Ulster's posts. Humphreys then began to run the game landing three penalties with the third in the 78th minute looking to have done the trick for Ulster. However, Llanelli proved to have more in the locker with that Proctor try and Jones' superb conversion.
