![]() | Wednesday, 4 April, 2001, 20:53 GMT 21:53 UK Best parts company with Irish ![]() London Irish have struggled for much of the season London Irish confirmed on Wednesday that their rugby director Dick Best had left the club. The contract of the former England coach was not due to expire until 31 May, but he reached an agreement with the Exiles to leave immediately. Former South African international centre Brendan Venter is set to take over as player/coach. London Irish are currently battling for a place in the end of season Premiership play-offs. "London Irish and Dick Best have reached an undisclosed settlement under which Mr Best leaves the club immediately to pursue his career elsewhere," a club statement said. Despite making several pre-season signings, Best failed to lift Irish above mid-table, while they failed to reach the European Shield knockout stages. They remain favourites to finish eighth in the league, which would give them a likely play-off spot on 28 April against champions Leicester at Welford Road. | See also: Other top Rugby Union stories: Links to top Rugby Union stories are at the foot of the page. | ||
