Noble not fazed by Wigan rumours

Wigan coach Brian Noble has insisted that speculation over his future will not take his mind away from the job.

Earlier this week it emerged that his post was offered to New Zealand's World Cup-winning boss Stephen Kearney by chairman Ian Lenagan.

But Noble told BBC Sport: "I'm certainly not distracted by it.

"We're still in contention for two trophies and, with 10 games to go, this could be a fabulous season for us and that has got to be everyone's focus,"

Noble's deal with Wigan expires at the end of the season and they currently lie just outside the Super League play-off places and have a Challenge Cup semi-final to come against Warrington in August.

But their hopes of silverware took a knock earlier this week when second rower Gareth Hock was provisionally suspended by the Rugby Football League after testing positive for cocaine.

Noble believes his side can recover from their shock defeat by the Celtic Crusaders in their last Super League game when they take on Hull KR on Sunday.

"I am focussed on keeping this team together, certainly after what happened earlier in the week," he added.

"We have to stay together and propel ourselves towards the end of the season."

Noble also revealed that the reports about Kearney being linked with his job were not unexpected.

"I have got a lot of friends in Australasia and I have got a grapevine that is better than your network here - just," he said.

"I'm actually close friends with Stephen as well, so let's say it wasn't a surprise to me.

"Ian is quite within his rights to speak to whoever he likes, and I'm pretty confident he has spoken to other people, but that doesn't distract me.

"We have a good relationship and while it can be a distraction and can be upsetting and hurtful, the only thing that is in your control is this week's performance and the rest of the season.

"I have a belief in what I do and in what I think builds a winning team and a winning club and if you look at the progress we have made over the last three years I think it has been pretty substantial.

"Although we haven't got to a major final, we aren't too far away."
