Gasnier wants to remain a Dragon |
Wigan have not given up hope of signing Australia and St George Illawarra centre Mark Gasnier. The Warriors appeared to have lost out on the player after the Dragons refused to release him from his contract.
But Wigan supremo Maurice Lindsay has told the Sydney Morning Herald he is not about to accept defeat.
"Everyone in Sydney knew the club was prepared to release him and we got that confirmed formally from his managers," said the Warriors chief executive.
Gasnier, 23, had been linked with a 1m move to the Warriors only for St George to claim the player had agreed to stay in Australia.
"We had discussions about a possible release but could not resolve details such as a date of return," said Dragons chief executive Peter Doust.
"I certainly never wanted him to go anywhere. Mark is a key member of our team and fundamental in our plans."
 | I am pleased that the speculation over my playing future has now been settled |
Gasnier, who is currently sidelined with a broken collar bone suffered in the deciding State of Origin match, says he would be happy to stay with St George.
"I totally understand the club's position and they are well within their rights to make the decision they have," he said in the club statement.
"I have had some things to consider over recent months but I am pleased that the speculation over my playing future has now been settled.
"I just want to get on with it now and play some good football for the Dragons."
