Wildcats complete referee course

The group can now referee at low level grade games

Wakefield Wildcat players Jason Demetriou and Duncan MacGillivray have qualified as lower-grade referees after completing a course.

The pair were joined by the club's scholarship players at the course which was delivered by RFL match officials development manager Paul Carr.

"It gives them a better understanding of the laws of the game," said Carr.

"As part of the RFL's respect campaign we want to educate and ensure match officials are treated with respect."

The course covered several topics including misconduct, playing of the ball, try scoring, communication and other areas where many penalties can be conceded.

Wakefield hope the scheme will help players gain more knowledge of the rules and improve their team's discipline.

Carr added: "Players having a better understanding of the game is obviously what we're looking for as a governing body and hopefully it will help in the recruitment of referees.

"Not only does the course give the players an option of refereeing once they've finished their careers it will also help them while they're still playing."
