Wakefield have been given permission by Salford to approach James Lowes about their coaching vacancy. The former Great Britain international is currently assistant coach to Karl Harrison at the Reds.
The Wildcats are looking to replace Tony Smith, who left the relegation threatened club in the wake of their 26-20 defeat at Huddersfield.
"They rang earlier in the week asking for permission to speak to Jimmy," said Salford football director Steve Simms.
"He's a quality person and a quality coach and it's not surprising that people are putting his name to big jobs.
"We've got something good going here and I'd like Jimmy to be part of it but I would never stand in his way.
"At the end of the day he will make the right decision."
Lowes will be in charge of the Reds for their match against Catalans Dragons in Narbonne on Saturday because Harrison is recuperating at his Leeds home from a ruptured Achilles tendon.
Meanwhile, former St Helens and Wigan coach Ian Millward revealed on Thursday that he was approached by the Wildcats but had ruled himself out of the reckoning.
Millward is currently helping out his old club Leigh in a voluntary capacity until later in the year when he returns to Australia to become assistant coach at North Queensland.
"Wakefield contacted me to see if I may be available to go there until the end of the season," he told sportinglife.com.
"It is no reflection on them whatsoever but I am very happy with what I am doing now and I am looking forward to my new role with the North Queensland Cowboys in the NRL."
