St Helens' Knowsley Road ground is earmarked for housing |
Plans for St Helens' new stadium have been signed off by St Helens Council and submitted to Government office. It follows extensive talks between the council and the Health and Safety Executive in Bootle over the 46-acre former United Glassworks site. The HSE have agreed that a risk assessment of the nearby Jackson Street gas-holder is unnecessary because it is outside the stadium consultation zone. The council approved the plans for the £25m 18,000 capacity stadium on 20 May. Council leader Brian Spencer said: "It is now in the hands of the Government to consider the decision of St Helens Council and enable the developer to get on with building the stadium." A multi-million pound Tesco Extra store will also form part of the development. Should all go to plan, Saints will move from their Knowsley Road ground, which has been the club's home since 1890, during the 2010 season.
