Gidley won the last of his 11 caps in 2004 |
St Helens have signed former Australian Test centre Matt Gidley from Newcastle Knights on a two-year contract. Gidley will be a replacement for Saints star Jamie Lyon who returns to Australia next season.
Newcastle say Gidley has been released from the last year of his contract to move to the Super League leaders.
"I always wanted to go overseas while I was still playing well and this is an exciting opportunity for me and my family," he said.
Gidley has spent 12 seasons with the Knights and played for Australia 11 times, most recently in 2004.
"I've been lucky enough to have a wonderful run and the club's been a huge influence on my life," he added.
"I'm really appreciative that the Knights have allowed me to move overseas next year.
"I've spoken to players at the Knights who have played there like Andrew Johns, Craig Smith and Brian Carney and they said the footy being played over there was of a really high standard."
