Gower could be tempted to Salford |
Salford City Reds are confident of signing Australia Test half-back Craig Gower for the 2006 season. The Penrith Panthers captain was given a guided tour of the site of the Red's proposed new stadium on Thursday.
Salford are thought to have offered the 26-year-old a 1.5m five-year deal to quit the National Rugby League when his Penrith contract runs out.
"We had a talk to him and showed him around - he seemed pretty keen," said Salford director Steve Simms.
"He's got a commitment to Australia at the moment and that's all he is concentrating on, which is quite right.

"But I'll talk to his agent when he gets back to Australia and he is going to sit down with his family and his club.
"If things don't work out for him in Australia, we're pretty confident he will come to us. I'm optimistic."
Penrith are keen to retain the services of their skipper, but Gower admitted he was impressed by Salford's bold plans.
"If things go to plan they're going to be a big club," he said.
"They took me around and showed me what they're doing. I'll go back to Penrith and see what happens. It's an option."
