Harlequins recall coach Rob Powell from Lebanon job

Harlequins

Harlequins have recalled acting head coach Rob Powell from his duties with the Lebanon national team.

Powell was Brian McDermott's assistant at the club when he took up the role with the Cedars on a one-month deal.

But McDermott's return to Leeds meant Powell was placed in interim charge of Quins on the day the ex-coach departed.

And the club have now called him back to London to oversee planning for next season, with Powell saying: "I'm really sad to have to leave the Cedars."

He guided Lebanon to an 16-8 friendly win over Italy in his first match in charge, but Italy won 24-16 when the teams met again last Saturday.

Powell added: "I've really enjoyed my time here and I would like to thank the boys and all the management team for this opportunity and their support."

Lebanese Rugby League Federation chief operating officer Remond Safi said: "It's disappointing for this situation to arise halfway through our preparations for next month's Mena (Middle East and North Africa) Championship.

"But the LRLF fully understand the situation and accept Rob's need to return to England. We wish him all the best and hope to see him back on a Lebanese rugby league field in the future.

"We will look forward to welcoming his colleague Latham Tawhai as the new interim Cedars coach. From Rob's accounts, our squad will be in very good hands."
