Hetherington is the chief executive of both Leeds Rhinos and Carnegie |
Leeds Rhinos chief executive Gary Hetherington believes the selection of the England Elite squad is the first step towards central contracts. The 17-man squad, named by coach Tony Smith at the start of May, is expected to be added to for the game against France on 13 June. "I think this is the start of central contracts," Hetherington told the BBC's Super League Show. "This will be the nucleus of the players to be contracted to the RFL." Youngsters Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook, of Harlequins, and Castleford's Michael Shenton and Joe Westerman were all included in the squad. St Helens' Leon Pryce missed out, while there is currently no recognised full-back in the group. Hull FC's Tom Briscoe was included despite the fact he is out injured until August, signalling that more players will be called up before the clash with France. | 606: DEBATE |
Hetherington added: "This squad will be added to, but these initial players will eventually become contracted to the RFL and I'm very much in favour of this. "The RFL manages international rugby, the players go and play for England and have a role to play too as international players, both on and off the field. "At the moment the whole bill for paying these elite players rests with clubs and I think it is only reasonable for the RFL to pay some of this bill and recognises these quality players."
