 McGuire scored 35 tries in 2004 |
Kevin Sinfield says Danny McGuire is just as lethal on a rugby pitch as Gary Lineker was on the football field. "Gary Lineker was a poacher who knew where the ball was going to drop and would knock it in the back of the net," the Leeds skipper told BBC Sport.
"Danny's got a bit more than that - he also creates stuff - but he's a born finisher and I'm glad he's on my side."
McGuire has rattled up 11 tries in just seven games for Leeds this season to top the Super League scoring charts.
He added four to his tally in the 60-0 demolition of Harlequins at the Twickenham Stoop, all four coming before half-time.
And Sinfield believes the 23-year-old stand-off can go on to eclipse his amazing feat of 2004, when he went over the whitewash 35 times, finishing one behind Bradford winger Lesley Vainikolo.
"I think he can," said Sinfield. "The way he reads the game is as good as anyone I've seen."
Lineker, who now hosts Match of the Day for the BBC, was a prolific goalscorer for club and country.
The former Leicester, Everton, Barcelona and Tottenham striker scored 48 goals in 80 games for England.
