McDermott comes out of retirement

Widnes have convinced former Great Britain and Leeds prop Barrie McDermott to return to playing after just four months of retirement.

The 33-year-old has signed a part-time contract with the Vikings, but will continue his coaching role with Leeds.

McDermott had announced his retirement after Leeds' defeat in last year's Grand Final, but was talked into a return by friend Terry O'Connor.

"I'm looking forward to taking Widnes back to Super League," said McDermott.

"I got so fed up of O'Connor mithering, it was easier to sign - he's not stopped going on at me since October!"

McDemott recently made a "one-off" return in a pre-season friendly for Oldham against a young Leeds side, but O'Connor - the best man at McDermott's wedding - convinced him to make a more permanent return.

The veteran prop told BBC Radio Leeds: "I've got a book by the Australian coach Wayne Bennett called 'Don't die with the music inside you' and the music has been pounding away inside me for months.

"I still feel very very competitive and I just miss everything about the game."

Widnes moved for McDermott after prop Ryan Tandy was ruled out for up to three months with a shoulder injury.

"It's great to have a player of Barrie's quality and experience on board and I'm looking forward to his contribution during the season," said Widnes coach Steve McCormack.

McDermott's job coaching the Leeds youngsters will not be affected, with the prop expected to train at weekends and the evenings with Widnes.
