Monaghan has played for Canberra and Sydney Roosters |
Castleford say controversial former Canberra Raiders three-quarter Joel Monaghan is one of three centres they were interested in signing. Monaghan wants to resurrect his career in England after quitting Canberra following publication of a compromising photograph on the internet. Tigers chief executive Richard Wright said: "We have spoken to three overseas centres about joining the club. "One of those players is Joel Monaghan and talks are ongoing". Up to four Super League clubs, including Harlequins, are thought to be keen to take the 28-year-old, who was in Australia's World Cup final team two years ago. Castleford want a replacement for England international Michael Shenton, who has joined St Helens, and Australian James Evans, who announced his retirement after failing to recover from a groin injury. Monaghan will is set to leave Canberra this week before heading to England to start pre-season training alongside elder brother Michael at Warrington. The player's agent Jim Banaghan said: "I think it's best that we let a bit of the heat and emotion go out of the situation before we starting negotiating and the English clubs think that's a good idea. "Joel is going over very soon to start training with his brother Michael at Warrington. "I'll go over in a couple of weeks to start talking to clubs with him."
