Chris Dean joined Wakefield from St Helens in December |
Wakefield put their off-field problems to one side to run in seven tries on the way to victory over Catalan. Frankie Mariano and Chris Dean each scored twice for the Wildcats, with Luke George, Kieran Hyde and Kevin Penny also crossing the line. Sebastien Raguin and Cyril Stacul replied for the Dragons. Despite earning their first win of the season, the Wildcats stay bottom of Super League because of a four-point penalty for entering administration. The Wildcats took the lead when Mariano raced unopposed over the home line, with Penny rounding David Ferriol for the second score. Josh Vievar converted both tries and added a penalty but Raguin powered over for the Dragons, with Scott Dureau kicking the extras to cut the deficit to 14-8 at the break. However, the Wildcats took control in the second half as Dean squeezed over in the corner, Mariano raced in after a Cyril Stacul knock on and Dean added his second. Stacul went over in the corner to give the hosts some consolation but Wakefield were not finished as first Hyde then George touched down after sloppy handling by the hosts.
Catalans coach Trent Robinson: "We need to know how to claw our way back into games. We didn't manage it last week, and although we were better this week, we didn't manage it this week either. "Given the amount of turnovers we came up with, we didn't get enough possession to look like getting back in the game." "Sometimes you've got to know when to conserve the pass and when to put out that game-breaking ball. "Although we moved the ball around, you've got to know when to throw that last pass or hold and protect it and go into the contact. "You can't win a game when you complete your sets as poorly as we did." Wakefield coach John Kear: "I think you have to applaud the players - it's been a hell of a week. "We've lost three senior players from our squad for various reasons, and our financial problems have been well documented, but we have a new owner now which will offer us some off-field stability. "You could tell there was something there amongst the players. Intensity and focus were both there, and I think the performance reflects that."
