Richards has now scored 25 tries in Super League this season

Pat Richards scored a hat-trick and kicked a further 14 points as Super League leaders Wigan demolished Hull.

Richards opened the scoring by gathering Paul Deacon's kick and touching down in the corner before Liam Farrell forced over.

After Darrell Goulding crossed, Sam Tomkins scored either side of half-time to effectively end the contest.

Hull came in for further punishment as Richards got his second and third tries either side of Farrell's second score.

The home side, without seven first-team players through injury and suspension, actually started impressively but Wigan got the first points after Deacon spotted Craig Hall off his wing and clipped a kick over his head to Richards.

The lead was extended when Richards was set free down the left and, although the home fans screamed for a forward pass, fed George Carmont, who found Farrell.

Wigan were out of sight by the break as Goulding took Sean O'Loughlin's forward-looking pass to touch down and Tomkins ran in after Jordan Turner shelled a high kick.

Hull continued to suffer after the break as Tomkins ran on to Richards' grubber kick, with the Irish winger getting his second after Harrison Hensen's pass.

Still Wigan were not done as Farrell powered in after a stunning reverse pass from Tomkins and Richards completed his hat-trick by grounding Tomkins' kick.

The win sees Wigan open up a four-point gap over second-placed Warrington, while Hull will be usurped in fourth if Leeds beat Salford on Sunday.

Hull FC coach Richard Agar said:

"I thought that we had some blokes that tried exceptionally hard and had some good games.

"I thought that in the first half the scoreline might have done us an injustice but ultimately we made elementary errors.

"We have to be a whole heap better than that. Wigan have done that to us and they've done it to a number of teams this year. They've got a ruthless streak to them."

Wigan stand-in coach Shaun Wane said:

"I'm really pleased with the win. This week has been a tough week. Last week was a hard result to take but the lads responded.

"We've got some really strong characters in the team and it's been a real flogging for some of the players.

"They responded really well. We've had two days in Hull and I could just tell in the team hotel that they were ready to rip in and they've done that today.

"I'm very defence orientated and the most important thing for me was that nil, but not only that, the desire we showed at the end to keep going."
