Aussie winger Chris Hicks has now run in 12 Super League tries this season

Title-chasing Warrington survived a spirited Huddersfield fightback to move back within four points of leaders Wigan at the top of Super League.

After being shocked by Luke Robinson's early try, Warrington ran in four tries to lead 20-10 at half time.

Two more came after the break, winger Chris Hicks, with his second, and Matt King stretching the hosts clear.

But, despite Jamahl Lolesi and Leroy Cudjoe, with his second, pulling two back, Paul Wood's late try sealed it.

Adrian Morley, Chris Bridge, who also kicked four goals, and Chris Riley, with his 16th try of the season, were Warrington's other scorers.

In a repeat of last season's Challenge Cup final, the Giants again ended on the losing side.

But they at least salvaged some pride after their embarrassing 60-4 fifth-round exit to Warrington in this season's Challenge Cup at the Galpharm just two weeks ago.

Warrington's win moves them back into second but that seemed a long way off after an explosive start.

With less than a minute gone, Warrington were reduced to 12 men for 10 minutes when Riley was sin binned, having been ruled to have held Huddersfield scrum-half Scott Grix down too long after a try-saving tackle.

The visitors then immediately made their extra man tell when hooker Robinson darted over from acting half-back.

But that early 4-0 advantage lasted just three minutes as Michael Monaghan sent captain Adrian Morley crashing over from close range.

Warrington increased their lead midway through the first half when, on the sixth tackle, they kept the ball alive and a long pass from Lee Briers allowed Bridge to glide through.

And it got even better for Tony Smith's side three minutes later when Briers this time linked up with Richie Mathers, whose pass got Riley over in the corner.

Warrington were again threatening to swamp the Giants but Huddersfield were grateful for some respite when the home side lost possession pressing for another try and Giants winger Cudjoe raced 80 metres for his first try.

The Giants now trailed by just six points but Warrington increased their lead six minutes before half-time when more slick handling between Bridge, Mathers and King created the space for Aussie winger Hicks to score.

Warrington then added another six minutes after the restart when Bridge broke from deep inside his own half and ran 50 metres before sending the supporting Hicks beneath the posts.

Huddersfield's cause was further hindered when Lee Gilmore, already placed on report for a challenge on Morley, became the second player sin binned.

And, two minutes later, Warrington cashed in with their sixth try when a Briers kick was plucked out of the air by Hicks, who squeezed the pass out of the tackle for King to score in the corner.

Two tries in five minutes gave Huddersfield hope of a dramatic comeback.

Cudjoe's powerful break allowed Lolesi in before he turned try-scorer when he got on the end of Robinson's pass to run in his second, reducing the deficit to 10 points with 12 minutes left.

But, despite enduring some anxious late moments, substitute Wood had the final word in the last minute.

Warrington coach Tony Smith said:

"Huddersfield were commendable in their efforts. But I was really pleased with the effort put in by our boys.

"They had to overcome a lot today from the word go and handled it very well.

"It will toughen us up for the days when things aren't going for you and they certainly did not today. We earned every little bit of what we got and we deserved it."

Huddersfield coach Nathan Brown said:

"That was rock bottom for me. We can't kick off properly, we can't even catch kick-offs when we score. It was just embarrassing. We've lost the art of how to actually play the game.

"People have just lost the plot and it's different people each week. We've had a tough month and the most disappointing thing is that as a team we are more talented than last year.

"But last year we beat far superior opposition by working hard for each other and showing resolve in defence which we've lost at the moment."
