Pat Richards kicked three goals to secure Wigan's third straight win |
Wigan staged a stunning second-half fightback to defeat Warrington and climb to the top of Super League XV. Warriors were heading for defeat when the hosts opened up a 16-4 half-time lead with tries from Richie Myler, Chris Riley and David Solomona. But the visitors ran in three tries in nine minutes through Amos Roberts, Darrell Goulding and Joel Tomkins. Solomona almost won it for Wolves, but he had a try disallowed for a knock-on with just 71 seconds remaining. It was one of three Warrington scores ruled out by the fourth official but the Wolves have only themselves to blame for their first defeat of the season after throwing away a 12-point lead. Wigan capitalised on an injury to Lee Briers who, after landing two conversions for Warrington, was forced out of the game on 51 minutes. Wolves put Wigan under serious pressure in the last five minutes, Chris Bridge's attempt at goal going inches wide, followed by Solomona's disallowed try. Wigan will not take pride in their first-half performance, when Warrington produced fast, accurate play from the outset. But a second-half comeback earned their third straight win and their place at the top of the early season table.
Warrington Wolves coach Tony Smith said: "Solomona is distraught in there, saying sorry to all his team-mates. But it's not all down to him. He'll score plenty this year. "It's fine-line stuff sometimes. We were within a centimetre or two of snatching the victory. It's not just down to one thing, we had a few opportunities. "In the second half, we didn't perform the way we wanted to. We went a bit flat and allowed our opposition to get back into it. "That's what they can do. They're a dangerous team. They've got some speed and can turn it on."
