Wakefield's hopes of climbing to the top of Super League lay in tatters after rampant Leeds ran in four tries during a fractious first half.

Scott Donald, Keith Senior, Jordan Tansey and Danny McGuire touched down for Leeds while referee Ashley Klein also sin-binned three players.

Ben Jeffries' try on the stroke of half-time gave the hosts some hope.

Ryan Atkins and Peter Fox both grabbed try doubles as Wakefield fought back but Ryan Bailey's try saw Leeds home.

Leeds dominated the early stages and scored their first try after just six minutes when Donald squeezed over in the left corner.

Senior crossed in the same spot for the visitors' second try, with Kevin Sinfield adding the conversion, but Senior was soon sin-binned with Wakefield's Olivier Elima for fighting.

Paul March followed suit for a professional foul and an excellent long-range break allowed Tansey to cross before McGuire scampered over to put Leeds 24-0 up.

Jamie Rooney sent Jeffries racing over the line on the stroke of half-time and Rooney added the two points for an interval score of 24-6.

Two Fox tries in the first six minutes of the second half, plus a Rooney conversion, saw the hosts cut Leeds' advantage to eight points.

Atkins then touched down to make it 24-20 but Bailey hit back for Leeds and Wakefield's chances suffered a further blow when prop Richard Moore was sent to the sin bin for a disgraceful high tackle on McGuire.

Atkins claimed his second try to briefly reignite Wakefield's hopes but late penalties from Rob Burrow and Sinfield made the game safe for the visitors.

  • Wakefield boss John Kear:
"We will analyse our own performance but I hope the man in the middle's performance is analysed as well - I hope the governing bodies will have a look at that.

"The penalty count weighed heavily in Leeds' favour during the first half but my players deserve great credit.

"I think the fans have seen a right royal show tonight and we contributed hugely to what was a great spectacle."

  • Leeds boss Tony Smith:
"I thought both teams played some great stuff and it's not doom and gloom because we didn't do well in the second half.

"We showed we had determination and when the momentum gets going from a side then it's hard to stop it.

"To come away at the end with more points takes some doing and sometimes you need to rest some players.

"That comes down to each given game and if they need a rest then they will get a rest."
