Goals: Hodgson
Salford's late revival fell just short as they had to settle for a thrilling draw against Harlequins.
Early tries by Tyrone Smith, Chris Melling and Paul Sykes put Quins ahead before John Wilshere and Luke Robinson brought the Reds back into the game.
Robinson's error to let Julien Rinaldi score looked to be decisive before late efforts by Andy Coley and Michael Korkidas drew Salford level.
But David Hodgson's missed goal let Quins off the hook, ensuring a draw.
Three tries in the opening minutes had the home fans in dreamland, with Smith starting things when he got under Danny Orr's quick-thinking cross-field kick.
Scott Hill set up Melling to dash over for the second and was involved in the third as Sykes went over in the right-hand corner.
Wilshere pulled one back from Simon Finnigan's slick pass, and then his kick through set up Robinson to score right on half-time.
But after the restart, Robinson's failure to hold on to Rinaldi in the tackle let him score and restore Quins' lead.
It looked to be enough until Henry Paul's misjudged kick launched a Reds counter, finishing in Coley's try.
Then another poor kick, this time by Orr, set up a move rounded off by Korkidis's last-minute touchdown.
It fell to Hodgson to try and seal a famous win but his missed goal ensured the game ended as dramatically as it had started.
Harlequins coach Brian McDermott "We were very poor in the second half. There were a number of poor finishes from our breaks and that is disappointing.
"We had guys playing who wouldn't have necessarily started if my whole squad
was fully fit. I'm still looking to add more bodies into the squad.
"We didn't have any sort of awareness in the second-half and that proved
costly. We allowed Salford back in the game."
Salford coach Karl Harrison "I have mixed emotions about the game. We weren't at our best. Harlequins were very efficient and made it difficult for us to play against.
"We could have conceded a few more tries but in the end we have ground out a point.
"Obviously I'm disappointed with that kick at the end, Dave Hodgson is in the
dressing room distraught but he was fantastic again and his kicks kept us in the game at various points."
