Hull: (0) 10
Tries: Sing
Goals: Tickle (3)

Catalans Dragons: (6) 10
Tries: Mogg, Duport
Goals: Gorrell

Catalans Dragons put in a superb defensive display to earn a share of the spoils against Hull FC.

Peter Sharp's home side, who lost in last season's Grand Final, looked well below par and lacked ideas.

Adam Mogg went over for the Dragons early in the first half and Vincent Duport added a second after the break.

Matt Sing cut the gap for Hull but although Danny Tickle kicked two goals to level it, he missed a late effort which could have secured the win.

Hull struggled without the influence of stand-off Paul Cooke, who missed out with a knee injury, and they failed to find any rhythm.

Ex-Canberra Raiders centre Mogg managed the opening try of the first half, collecting Casey Maguire's ball to sidestep Kirk Yeaman and cross with Aaron Gorrell adding the conversion.

Hull almost drew level through both Yeaman and Shaun Briscoe but Catalans held firm and deserved their lead.

Tickle's 48th minute penalty finally put Hull on the scoreboard but moments later they fell further behind when Lionel Teixido and Duport combined for Duport to go over.

Hull fought back when Sing collected Shayne McMenemy's cut-out pass to cross the line and Tickle's second goal reduced the deficit to two points.

Tickle then levelled the scores with a penalty after Alex Chan was sinbinned while Hull's conditioner Billy Mallinson was shown a red card by referee Ben Thaler for entering the field without permission.

Hull tried to put pressure on the Dragons late on but they were unable to get a winning score.

  • Hull coach Peter Sharp
  • "We'll be better for the run. I imagine there will be a few sides like us, there are no excuses. I thought it was a fair game of football and we're warming into it.

"I thought it was a tough game of footy. They played very well and we had a couple of opportunities that we didn't take so we paid the price and came away with a draw.

"These things are going to happen early in the season in particular."

  • Catalans Dragons coach Mick Potter
  • "Hull didn't give us a chance to get down the other end of the field and build any pressure.

"They kept the pressure on us all the time, so I'm very happy with our defence. Hopefully we can maintain that and get better.

"I'm sure once the weather warms up then teams will throw the ball about a bit more."
