Wakefield completed their own great escape as they condemned Castleford to relegation from Super League with a tension-filled victory at Belle Vue.

The Tigers had the better of the early stages, forging an 11-2 lead with tries from Willie Manu and Adam Fletcher.

But tries from James Evans and Jason Demetriou put Wakefield 14-11 ahead.

Captain Danny Nutley put Castleford back in front, Monty Betham hit back for Wakefield before further tries from Kevin Henderson and Evans sealed it.

We have done it. We are in Super League, and that is what we wanted

Wakefield coach John Kear
Coach John Kear calculated when he took over in early August that Wakefield, 8-1 odds-on favourites for relegation, would require four wins from their final six games to stay up.

After last week's stirring victory at Bradford, his prediction proved spot-on as his side duly delivered the fourth of those to send the Trinity faithful home delirious.

For Castleford, it was a case of history repeating itself, having also lost to Wakefield two years ago to lose their Super League status.

Their points haul of 19 is the highest of any club to be relegated, indicative of the intense nature of the dogfight.

They started well, and after Jamie Rooney's early penalty for Trinity, took the lead with a fortuitous try.

David Solomona's failure to collect Danny Brough's chip through allowed Manu to get the slightest touch to score, Brough converting.

Wakefield thought they had scored with a length-of-the-field effort from Ben Jefferies, but the try was ruled out after Henderson pulled back Fletcher.

Brough missed the subsequent penalty but Cas grabbed a second try after 21 minutes following a superb break from Michael Platt, Fletcher exposing Wakefield's defence to score in the right corner.

Brough's drop-goal put the visitors in command, but Trinity turned things around in the 10 minutes before half-time.

First an instinctive kick from Betham landed in the arms of Evans, who forced his way over, Rooney's conversion making it 8-11.

The hosts saw full-back Colum Halpenny stretchered off in a neck brace after a sickening collision with Gray Viane.

There was no lack of effort but our execution was poor

But they went in at half-time with a narrow advantage after Demetriou shrugged off four would-be tacklers to score, Rooney's goal making it 14-11.

Both captains led by example on the resumption, Nutley forcing his way over to put Cas ahead, only for Betham to do likewise at the other end.

Leading 20-17 going into the final quarter, Cas came up with the decisive score in the 64th minute.

Henderson, who moments earlier dropped the ball with the try-line gaping, this time finished decisively, and Rooney's smart drop-goal gave them further breathing space.

Evans' second try nine minutes from time put the outcome beyond doubt, to the delight of Wakefield and the utter dejection of Castleford.

  • Wakefield coach John Kear:

  • "We have worked really hard for two months and the players responded absolutely sensationally. We have done it! We are in Super League, and that is what we wanted.

"We expected Castleford to come out and put their foot on the throttle but we just said if we play through it we would come through in the end, and so it proved."

  • Wakefield captain Monty Betham:

  • "I thought I was playing in a Test match. There was a lot riding on it but I don't like relegation at all and we really feel for everyone at Tigers."

  • Castleford coach Terry Matterson:

  • "There was no lack of effort but our execution was poor. We prepared well and got ourselves in a great position but there were some uncharacteristic mistakes and decisions.

"I am out of a job now and have got to look for another one. But I am confident in my ability as a coach, and that I will still be coaching at the top level, wherever that is."

  • Castleford captain Danny Nutley:

  • "In a high-intensity game like that you have got to hold the ball and they did a better job. It hasn't hit home yet but it is so disappointing."
